About our Afghanistan/United States relations news

Latest news on matters concerning Afghanistan and the United States, which occur against the backdrop of a history of military invasion.

As part of the so-called 'War on Terror', the United States and its allies invaded Afghanistan in 2001 as part of Operation Enduring Freedom to topple the Taliban Government and deny al-Qaeda a safe base of operations in Afghanistan following the 9/11 Terror Attacks. US forces would remain in Afghanistan as part of an international coalition to support the fledgling Islamic Republic of Afghanistan against Taliban insurgents until they controversially withdrew in 2021.
