Founded in 1972 as the Alberta Oilers of the World Hockey Association (WHA), the team was rebranded to the Edmonton Oilers the following year and joined the National Hockey League following the NHL-WHA merger in 1979. They play their home games at Rogers Place in downtown Edmonton.
The franchise has five Stanley Cup titles to their name, with their most recent feat coming in the 1988/89 season where the defeated the Boston Bruins over five games.
The Oilers also have minor league affiliations with the Bakersfield Condors of the American Hockey League (AHL) and the Fort Wayne Komets of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL).
