    About our US-Iraq news

Get the latest news on US-Iraq relations, which occur against the backdrop of a history of military invasion.

American-Iraqi relations have occurred against a backdrop of military conflict and invasion, first with the Gulf War (1990-1991) in response to Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait and then again with the Invasion of Iraq (2003), designed to ‘disarm’ the Saddam Hussein regime of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMDs), none of which were found by an independent UN inspection team.

US forces would remain in Iraq as part of anti-insurgency operations and to support the fledgling Republic of Iraq between 2003 and 2011, when most US forces were withdrawn. American involvement in Iraq would return in response to the threat posed by ISIL in 2014 as part of a multinational coalition, principally focusing on air and drone strikes. US forces finally withdrew from Iraq in 2021.
