Latest news on Lviv, a city in western Ukraine with a population of about 717,510. It has a rich history and was once the capital of the Kingdom of Galicia-Volhynia, the Habsburg Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria, and the Lwów Voivodeship in the Second Polish Republic. It is a cultural centre of Ukraine and is home to many institutions of higher education and cultural institutions, such as a philharmonic orchestra and an opera and ballet theatre. The city centre is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. During the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, Lviv became a safe haven for Ukrainians fleeing other parts of the country and served as a crucial arms and humanitarian supply route. The city was also targeted by missile strikes during the invasion and experienced a city-wide blackout in October 2022.
