Officially known as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam (SRV), the country is situated at the eastern edge of mainland Southeast Asia. Vietnam shares land borders with China, Laos, and Cambodia, as well as maritime borders with Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia. Its capital is Hanoi and its largest city is Ho Chi Minh City, which is commonly referred to by its former name Saigon.
The Vietnam War, which lasted from 1955 to 1975, had a profound impact on the country. After the North Vietnamese victory, Vietnam reunified as a unitary socialist state under the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) in 1976. Vietnam has since remained as a one-party socialist republic, one of the two communist states in Southeast Asia.
The country has undergone significant economic growth in recent years, transitioning from a centrally planned economy to a market-oriented one, and is considered one of the fastest-growing economies of the 21st century.
