The Thousand Islands (Kepulauan Seribu) off Jakarta and the highlands of Sumatra add natural beauty to a country of extraordinary diversity.

Sitting on the Pacific Ring of Fire, Indonesia faces frequent volcanic eruptions and earthquakes, from Semeru and Merapi to the 2004 Aceh tsunami. Its history runs from the Hindu-Buddhist kingdoms of Srivijaya and Majapahit, through the spice trade and Dutch colonial rule, to independence in 1945. Presidents from Sukarno and Suharto to Abdurrahman Wahid shaped the democratic era that began in 1998.
