    About our Uganda news

Latest news on Uganda, a landlocked country in East Africa, bordered by Kenya, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, and Tanzania. It has a population of around 49 million and its largest city and capital is Kampala. The country is named after the Buganda kingdom and its language, Luganda, is widely spoken. The official language is English, although Luganda is also widely used, and Swahili has been proposed as a second official language.

The country gained independence from the UK in 1962 but has since been marked by violent conflicts, including an eight-year dictatorship led by Idi Amin. The current president is Yoweri Museveni, who has been in power since January 1986 and was re-elected in the 2011, 2016, and 2021 general elections. After the 2021 election, the United States and the European Union called for an investigation into alleged abuses of power by the government and violence during the polling period. The US Department of State also called for an investigation into 'irregularities' in the election, while the EU Council of Ministers stated that opposition candidates were harassed, the media was suppressed, and observers' offices were raided. The European Parliament also passed a resolution stating that the election was not democratic and the security forces used excessive force.
