The US Department of State also called for an investigation into 'irregularities' in the election, while the EU Council of Ministers stated that opposition candidates were harassed, the media was suppressed, and observers' offices were raided. The European Parliament also passed a resolution stating that the election was not democratic and the security forces used excessive force.
