About our Python news

Latest news on Python, the programming language, covering Python security, Python vulnerability alerts, CVEs, PyPI malicious packages, supply chain attacks, Python 3 releases and updates, CPython, pip, Django, Flask, FastAPI, NumPy, pandas, PyTorch and the Python Software Foundation for developers and data scientists.

Python is a free, open-source, general-purpose programming language created by Guido van Rossum and first released in 1991. Valued for readable syntax and a large standard library, it is used for automation, web development and data science. The Python Software Foundation, a non-profit formed in 2001, holds its intellectual property, while an elected council guides it.

Supply-chain security is a recurring theme, as attackers target the PyPI package index with malicious or compromised packages. In October 2026 a compromised LiteLLM release on PyPI carried an infostealer and was later quarantined. Separately, the free-threaded build, which runs without the Global Interpreter Lock, became officially supported but optional in the 2025 release. Python's annual release in October 2026 added explicit lazy imports and made UTF-8 the default text encoding.

PyPI hosts the packages that developers install with pip, while uv, conda and virtual environments manage dependencies for projects. Data science and artificial intelligence rely on libraries such as NumPy, pandas, SciPy, scikit-learn, PyTorch, TensorFlow and Jupyter notebooks. For the web, frameworks such as Django, Flask and FastAPI are widely used, alongside Pydantic for data validation. The reference interpreter, CPython, is written in C, while alternatives such as PyPy and MicroPython target speed and small devices.

Python has a large global community, with PyCon conferences, local user groups, PyLadies chapters and volunteer maintainers. The Python Software Foundation funds grants and produces PyCon US, while the Steering Council decides on Python Enhancement Proposals (PEPs). Critics point to slow performance for CPU-heavy code, packaging complexity and the long-running debate over the Global Interpreter Lock.

Van Rossum began Python in the late 1980s at the CWI institute in the Netherlands, as a successor to ABC. He named it after the comedy group Monty Python rather than the snake, and its examples use spam and eggs. Python 3 arrived in 2008 without full backward compatibility, and Python 2 reached end of life on 1 January 2020. In 2018 he stepped down as benevolent dictator for life, and an elected Steering Council took over the language's direction.

Staying informed matters because a single compromised package or unpatched flaw can spread to many downstream projects. Our NewsNow Python news feed gathers the latest headlines on Python security, PyPI, releases, libraries and community news worldwide. It gives developers, security teams and data scientists a clear, up-to-date view of the Python ecosystem.
