About our Boris Johnson news

Latest news on Boris Johnson, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, who was forced to resign after a series of scandals.

Boris Johnson served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and Leader of the Conservative Party between July 2019 and September 2022. Born Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson on 19 June 1964 in New York City while his British parents were living in the US, Johnson was raised and educated in England, attending Eton College before studying at Balliol College, Oxford University. He was elected President of the Oxford Union in 1986, and following graduation worked as a journalist for The Daily Telegraph, going on to become editor of The Spectator magazine from 1999 to 2005.

Johnson was elected to parliament in 2001, and served as a shadow minister under Conservative leaders Michael Howard and David Cameron. In 2008 he was elected Mayor of London and resigned from the House of Commons; he was re-elected as mayor in 2012.

Johnson became a prominent figure in the successful Vote Leave campaign for Brexit in the 2016 EU membership referendum, and was subsequently appointed foreign secretary by then prime minister Theresa May. Johnson succeeded May as prime minister in 2019.

Johnson has been involved in several election successes, including leading the Conservative Party to its biggest parliamentary victory since 1987, in the 2019 General Election. In 2019, The Irish Times described him as "a deeply polarising figure, cherished by many older Conservatives but viewed by others as a serial liar and an amoral opportunist who sold Brexit to the British people on the basis of false promises."

In 1987, Johnson married his first wife Allegra Mostyn-Owen. Between 1993 and 2020, Johnson was married to Marina Wheeler; the couple had four children together. In 2009 Johnson fathered a daughter with Helen MacIntyre, and in April 2020 his fiancee Carrie Symonds gave birth to a son, Wilfred Lawrie Nicholas Johnson.
