About our Programming Languages news

Latest news on programming languages, covering Python, Java, JavaScript, TypeScript, C++, C#, Rust, Go, PHP, Kotlin, COBOL, language releases, compilers, memory-safe languages and security fixes for programmers and software developers.

A programming language is a formal way of giving instructions to a computer, from low-level languages close to the hardware to high-level ones that favour readability. Fortran, created at IBM in the 1950s, is widely regarded as the first high-level language, and COBOL followed in 1959 for business computing. Today languages are chosen for web back ends, data science, mobile apps, systems software and games.

Language news arrives as new releases, standards decisions and security fixes. On 21 October 2026 the PHP project issued emergency patches for two critical flaws, CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619. On 19 October 2026 OpenAI published an evaluation of AI models migrating COBOL to modern languages, based on tests that are not public. In February 2024 a US White House report urged developers to adopt memory-safe languages such as Rust.

Around the languages sit compilers and runtimes, package registries such as PyPI and npm, build tools and editors with language servers. Python is widely used for data science and automation, JavaScript and TypeScript for the web, and Java and C# for enterprise software. C, C++ and Rust are common in systems programming, while Kotlin and Swift target mobile apps.

Programmers learn through open-source projects, conferences, user groups and online courses. Standards bodies such as Ecma International and the ISO C++ committee guide JavaScript and C++, while foundations support Python, PHP and Rust. Critics point to the cost of migrating legacy code, fragmented tooling and debate over whether memory-unsafe languages should be retired.

C was created by Dennis Ritchie at Bell Labs in 1972 and was used to build Unix. Bjarne Stroustrup developed C++ as an extension of C. Python appeared in 1991, while Java and JavaScript both arrived in 1995, and Rust reached its first stable release in 2015.

Our NewsNow programming languages news feed gathers the latest headlines on Python, Java, JavaScript, C++, Rust, Go, PHP and other languages, plus compilers, releases and language security from around the world. It gives programmers and software developers a clear view of how the languages they use are changing.
