Established in 2009, the club is based in Gold Coast, Queensland, and is one of the youngest teams in the league. The Suns' team colours are red, gold, and blue.

As an expansion club, the Gold Coast Suns have yet to win an AFL premiership and have experienced varying levels of success since their inception. The Suns play their home games at Metricon Stadium, a modern multi-purpose venue located in Carrara, Queensland. The club has helped expand the reach of Australian rules football in Queensland, a region traditionally dominated by rugby league.
