She will be the first Black woman and the first LGBTQ+ person to represent California in the Senate.

Butler has a long history of working in politics and labor. She was a senior adviser to Vice President Kamala Harris during her 2020 presidential campaign, a director of public policy at Airbnb, and a union leader for nurses, janitors, and in-home caregivers. She was also appointed by Governor Jerry Brown as a regent of the University of California in 2018, but resigned in 2021.
