The book was banned in several countries and Rushdie was given police protection. In 1989, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the Supreme Leader of Iran, issued a fatwa calling for his assassination.

Since 2000, Rushdie has lived in the US. On Friday, 12 August 2022, Rushdie was attacked on stage at an event in New York state, as he was about to give a lecture at the Chautauqua Institution.
